Full Version: ORCA TL450 hood problems....

I have been having electric problems with my ORCA TL450, all in the hood. LEDs pack up, then come back on etc. Seems to be getting worse each day. Since it is only 5 weeks old my LFS said they could possibly replace the hood, subject to them being in stock which would be better for me.

Question is, how does the hood come off? I know there are screws for the hood looking top down when the hood is lifted up but are there any others you need to undo on the back? I did undo the screws I could see but didn't seem to make any difference so assume there must be some on the back (which I can't get to currently).

For anyone who has removed the hood, a description would be apppreciated.

Thanks as always.

Hi Mate,

The screws are a bit of a red herring, The Hood actual clips off the brackets on the back.
If you put the hood to 90%, you should be able to gently ease it off the back rails.
I was a bit apprensive the first time I did this, but believe me it is ok, it works. No need to undo screws.

Hope that helps.

Hi Scott,

You don't have to undo any screws to remove the lid. I did it once a couple days after I got my Orca because the fans stopped working. I don't remember exactly how I did it, but the "not so great" instructions tell you how to remove it. I think you open the lid slightly and then pull forward......and it slides off of the hinge mechanism. Once it's off, you just have to remove the screws inside the lid to get at the lights, etc.

By the way, I fixed the problem with my fans. The fan plugs were sealed tight with silicone....but some of the silicone also covered the electronic components on the board where the fans plug in. I removed all of the silicone. I have not had a problem with the fans stopping ever since. I can only speculate that the components were overheating (caused by sealing them in silicone) and shutting off the power to the fans.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!!!

Thanks guys - really appreciate the help. There was me thinking the screws on the hood attached to the tank were actually holding it on. icon_neutral.gif

I thought exactley the same thing when I tried to take it off the first time, they do appear like they are hinges, and common sense would say if they are the hinges, then unscrewing them would clear the issue. Just shows common sense doesnt always work.

Hi!

I`ve read the same thing all over the internetforums on how to remove the hood, butI fail to do so.

I open the lid appr. 10 %, then pull i towards me. It moves appr. 1 inch then stops.

What do I do next? Do I continue to pull, or? I am afraid that if I pull too hard I`ll break it:-/

Can anyone help me?

I am battling with this exact same problem, how do you remove the lid? I have tried everything (I have a noisy fan that needs attention)... if anyone know how to do this, please enlighten me... they say lift it 10 to 20 degree and pull towards you (without force)

I would love to hear from you all

Hi!
If it is a new model, I can probably help you. After a lot of struggling, I noticed there were mounted a blocking piece of plastic on each side. So, watching the lid from the top, you can see a screw at the back of the lid on each side, which has to be unscrewed. And the the blocking plastic pieces can slide off the lid, and the lid will be extremely easy to remove;-) (Just like everyone says it will)

OK, I'll have a look tonight... I really hope this helps, for what it worth... I bought the tank about 3 days ago, it's actually a BOYU TL-450 (Not Orca) having said that, I believe they are pretty much identical.

Have you experienced any noise with your hood fans? its seems to be only the one... they were both very quiet, but started making a screeching sound last night.

Thanks for your reply, I trust you have solved my problem

Many Thanks

Henri
