Hi, I am hoping to add a sump to my existing nano and dont want to drill the tank.

What are the disadvantages of having an overflow box rather then drilling the tank?

Are there any advantages?

Thanks
fras
I guess the main advantages are that you don't have to weaken the glass and you don't have to drill(or empty the tank in your case).

However they're pretty expensive for a good one and if the syphon breaks it could be disaster! I've seen failsafe backups though, such as pumps setup to draw any trapped air from the U and also float switches to stop a display overflow.

I've used a tunze overflow box and was very impressed it never stopped syphoning in two years.

If your local to Kent I know a guy who will drill the tank even with occupants in!! very reliable and cheap top bloke really. let me know.

overflow boxes (especially in small tanks) are obtrusive and ugly!

a stocked tank can be drilled if you take the water down about half way...

the way i solved the problem about breaking siphons was a piece of airline siliconed into the U tube and then that went to a venturi on one of my powerheads, its simple, but very efective
